Mary Lou's Story

After I graduated from HS I attended a business college, but I left after a year to marry Robert Buck my Air Force Lt. It broke my father's heart as he had worked all his life to provide a college education for his children. So after I married and because I promised my father, I attended Baylor University and graduated with a BSN, (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). My sweet father was so proud of me and my sister and brother who also obtained college degrees. I felt so smart, I married ny handsome Air Force pilot and also obtained a degree. Bob and I produced three wonderful and handsome sons. I worked most of my life as a nursing educator, in a multitude of hospitals and in the ER. I worked for 20 years at MDAnderson and ran the Apheresis Department and Blood Donor Center for that many years. My pilot husband and I traveled over the US and Europe. When he retired we returned to Houston where he graduated from law school and began practicing law. We raised three boys. My middle son was killed by a drunk driver. The only time I regreted moving here. That set us back. The recovery was painful and slow. After I retired from M.D.Anderson Hospital, Bob and I began to travel to see our own country and Mexico. My sweetheart died seven years ago. I still miss him, I always will, however, I may marry again someday. I had such a good marriage and I long for that lifestyle again. It may never come again, but who knows? Thankfully, Bob left me financially secur...Expand for more
e so after he died, I stopped working. I lost the desire to continue nursing. The thing about being a registered nurse is that you can alway return to nursing as there is such a need. So who knows? I have a wonderful circle of single friends, many who I grew up with as a child and who still live here. I have two loving sons, a sister, a lovely home in Sugar Land, a faithful female mutt dog, Missy and a love for Jehovah God.. Not a bad life. I always loved my home town and missed the family I left behind when I married, so when we retired we headed for the city I left behind. We arrived in Houston on my birthday and after Bob wished me a happy birthday he gave me Houston as a birthday gift. I saw the Houston sky line and thought " I am home at last". Bob was from Buffalo, New York but he loved Houston too, so I didn't have to put up a fight when we were deciding where to live after he retired from the Air Force. Houston won hands down. I love and am proud of my Hispanic background and our traditional Mexican food. No place serves Menudo like the restaurants here in Houston. Better still, try getting enchilladas or Menudo in Boston, Maryland, Germany or Washington, D.C. "NOT". So here I am again, back where I started, only this time I am without the man who gave me his name and who I called my sweetheart for 49 years. Still I am reminded that I had him longer than most and I will always have my memories. Like I said previously, not a bad life.
